Course Title BOHS S301 Asbestos and Other Fibres
Description This module enhances candidate knowledge of occupational hygiene practice in relation to fibrous dusts. The module concentrates on asbestos but also covers other fibres which are increasingly finding uses in industry e.g. MMMF, ARAMIDS. This course will benefit those working in asbestos consultancy as well as mainstream occupational hygiene, giving an understanding of the health risks associated with asbestos and other fibres as well as the means of evaluation & control.
Pre-Qualification There are no specific pre-qualifications however this is an intense course covering a wide range of subjects. S301 is the original written qualification that enables successful candidates to undertake the S301 Oral exam to gain the qualification Certified Competent Person (asbestos) from BOHS. NATAS advises that this course would be suitable for candidates who are already practising and experienced asbestos professionals looking to attain CCP status.
Duration 5 days including exam.

Asbestos in Buildings and Surveys
Types and uses of asbestos in buildings - Surveys of asbestos-containing materials (ACM’s) in buildings - Bulk sampling - Risk assessments of ACM’s in buildings -Management of ACM’s
Asbestos Removal and Clearance Testing
Preparation - Enclosures - Removal procedures - Waste removal - Role of analyst - Air monitoring and other inspection techniques, clearance testing (4 stage)
Air Sampling
Air sampling equipment and procedures - Clearance sampling
Analysis of Bulk Samples
Macroscopic examination - Sample preparation - Polarised light microscopy - Dispersion staining - Health and safety precautions during identification - Quality control - Interfering fibres and products
Fibre Counting
Setting up microscopes - Filter preparation - Calculation of results - Quality control - Electron microscopy
Educational Objectives On successful completion the student should be able to:
Describe the composition, nature and properties of asbestos and other MMMF.
Describe the health effects of asbestos and other fibres and apply appropriate exposure limits.
Advise on the implications of asbestos and MMMF in workplace activities as well as in situ in buildings.
Sample and identify asbestos fibres.
Conduct air sampling to determine airborne concentrations of asbestos fibres in accordance with HSE approved procedures (inc. four stage clearance).
Advise on containment, removal, disposal and management of asbestos in buildings in accordance with current legislation.
Assessment No practical assessment is taken with this course.
Examination A 2hr 15min written examination includes 2 sections consisting of a 60 question multi-choice exam paper plus an essay question. This exam will be independently invigilated by BOHS and is subject to a separate BOHS exam fee.
