Course Title BOHS P403 Asbestos Fibre Counting (PCM)
Description This module provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of fibre counting of asbestos air samples using phase contrast microscopy (PCM). The module is at a proficiency level which aims to provide the candidate with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out the stated work.
Pre-Qualification

Prior to training candidates should be familiar with HSG 248 Asbestos Analyst guide for sampling, Analysis and decontamination Procedures. Candidates will normally need to have some practical experience with Phase contrast Microscopy in order to pass the practical assessment. Due to demand on this course candidates will need to bring their own Phase Contrast Microscope.

Duration 2 days including assessment and exam.
Syllabus Outline Setting Up Microscope
Use of light microscopy - Setting up kohler illumination - Calibration of stage micrometer - Test slides - Theory of phase contrast microscopy - Microscope specifications - Use of Walton-Beckett graticule - Setting up various makes of microscope - Counting slides of known quality
Filter Preparation and Fibre Counting
Preparation of filters - Counting of fibres in accordance with the recognised counting rules - ERM and WHO methods as basis - Limitations of methods - Examination of accuracy, precision and systematic differences
Calculation of Results and Quality Control
External quality control schemes (UKAS, RICE, ISO, European Standards for GLP) - Internal quality control schemes (counting audits)
Practical Work
Microscope set up - Slide preparation - Fibre counting for a range of fibre densities and types
Educational Objectives Candidates will know the approved methods for fibre counting and have an understanding of their limitations and the requirements for quality control.
Assessment Candidates will undertake a practical assessment carried out by an independent assessor. As part of this, candidates must demonstrate their ability to mount filters, prepare slides, set up microscopes, count slides and make calculations.
Examination A 30 multi-choice question exam paper (45 mins) will be undertaken on the final day of the course. This exam will be independently invigilated by BOHS and is subject to a separate BOHS exam fee.
Certification BOHS P403 ‘Proficiency Certificate’ in Asbestos Fibre Counting
Costs Course: £325, Practical £175 plus VAT Exam: £122 VAT exempt
Notes To comply with the requirements for the ‘4-stage clearance procedure’, this module must be studied in conjunction with BOHS P404 – Air Sampling and Clearance Testing for Asbestos. Discounts available for multiple course bookings.
